Position Description

Estimates labor and material costs of printing and/or binding pamphlets, periodicals, books, and other printed matter based on job specifications. Prepares timely, accurate, and detailed cost estimates for printing jobs by determining the most economical method of manufacturing while considering production capacity of personnel and equipment.

Examines specifications, sketches, and sample layouts, and calculates unit and production costs considering factors such as size and number of sheets or pages, paper stock requirements, binding operations, halftones, number and units of colors, and quality of finished product, labor and material pricing, so as to determine cost effective and competitive price. Confers with internal and external resources to develop or confirm information regarding various cost elements. Makes suggestions for improvement and/or cost saving opportunities. Reviews and evaluates finished jobs and processes. Evaluates estimated standards against actual performance. Maintains current knowledge of raw material costs. Maintains the vendor list with current information, contacts, capabilities, and pricing. Develops, reviews, and updates estimating process standards based on current conditions and actual production results. May estimate cost of mailing finished printed matter if specified on order. May estimate labor and material cost of specific phase of printing. May work with external vendors to negotiate pricing and/or timelines.
