Salary Increase Survey & Forecast

ERI Economic Research Institute has been providing estimates of salary structure, budget, and merit increases since 1987. Specific jobs, particularly those within the professional sector, experience different merit and salary increase rates. Studies of functional position salaries evidence a fact masked by other planning surveys: salary growth varies by job function. Accounting salaries have risen dramatically in the past few years. It is no secret that executive salaries have outstripped middle management increases for decades. There is a general compression of salaries between the non-exempt and the exempt salaried professionals in the US, even more so in Canada (although "non-exempt" is not a term used there). Offshore movement of industrial jobs has left labor pools behind to face both fewer prospects and low wage growth. Variable pay plans have affected job functions differently. And the impact of employee benefits' sky-rocketing costs has had a dramatic effect by industry, reflecting the fact that most of health benefits cost increases have been shifted to the weakest (smaller private firms, mid-sized organizations not in the government or healthcare sectors, charities, and nonprofits) members of our economy.

Also masked in other surveys is the recognition that employee salary increases are derived from a limited pool of funds that are directly tied to the economic fortunes of their enterprises. Talking about salary increases without a discussion of future economic prospects is akin to fighting a battle at sea without considering the weather. We begin this Salary Increase Report with a discussion of the present and forecasted economic outlook. Then we provide future and past salary increase rates for your region. Salary increases are broken down by level (general employee, professional, management), by industry, and by job function (detailed data for specific jobs such as executive assistant or programmer).
